How We Raise Our Cattle      Gallery
My name is Karen Mathis and I personally welcome you to Angel Acres Farm, our family farm. The farm is owned and operated by my husband, Don and myself, with some very gifted help from our staff, our three children and four grandchildren.

In the beginning, it was our dream to have a place with springs, ponds and woods where we could hear the whippoor-wills, owls and coyotes while we looked at the stars in a wide open sky.  That is how it was on the farms we lived on when we were children.  We had the sense that it was better for our family to be close to the land, using its rich resources but not harming it.  These past few years have generously granted us those dreams and now we treasure the gift of Angel Acres Farm.  Some of the little miracles which occurred during the first year or so of making the farm habitable, have convinced us that the angels, indeed, are part of this dream come true.  So, we have named the farm to commemorate the angels.

In 2004 when we finally bought our farm, we had seen the Belted Galloway cattle in our travels and found them very interesting.  Research convinced us that this was one of the best breeds of cattle to raise on a grass only diet. With the assistance of the Belted Galloway Society, we found our first cows.  Esta, Christine and Crissy came to us first.  It was not long before the first bull, Sir Elliott, joined the girls.  That is how it started.  We have grown to over 300 head with three busy bulls and many romping calves dotting the landscape.  Each of our Belted Galloway are registered, with their lineage traced back for five generations.

As the herd increased, so did the acres of Angel Acres Farm.  To provide the cattle a tranquil and natural environment, we now have 300 acres of woods and open pasture among the big oaks and cedars in the rolling hills of central Missouri.  The scenery makes it a pleasure to walk daily among the cattle checking for adequate grassy growth, clean water supply and their general well being.

The chickens, geese, guineas, ducks, goats, sheep, cats, donkeys and our dog have been added for our entertainment.  They certainly do not disappoint!  However, each species has its' special purpose in the overall sustainability and symbiotic relationship with the land and our home.  It is with delight that we share the blessings of Angel Acres Farm through our Belted Galloway grass fed beef.
